3rd Grades: Perspective and Padlet

By this time of the school year I am in need of inspiration.  Standardized state tests are coming up and spring break is still weeks away.  So I asked the 3rd grade chair what skills I should be covering with the students the following week.  I had read Brendan Wenzel’s book, They All Saw a Cat, to them the week before so the idea of “perspective” was on my mind.  I wanted to introduce the students to another digital tool, so after brainstorming we decided we would do something about perspective and have the students use Padlet to record their response.

I found an intriguing photograph that I thought might inspire some interesting thoughts and could provide different storylines of what is going on. I googled, “What’s going on in this picture?” and found the New York Times’ website, “What’s Going on in this Picture?” https://goo.gl/G21vdd.  I choose the photo by Danielle Zalcman, which shows some Native Americans on horseback facing a line of law enforcement officers.  We don’t really know what is going on; you have to wait until a week after the photo is posted to find out the details.

I created a Padlet and arranged for the students to bring their tablets to the library.  I projected this classic image to grab the students attention and explained perspective:

“Perspective: What are the points of view?” is one of the International Baccalaureate’s Key Concepts.  Then I projected this photograph:

We asked the students to describe what they thought was going on.  We reminded them to provide text evidence of their opinions and statements. This was also a good opportunity for the students to practice writing using their tablets, which is a component of the upcoming Georgia Milestones test.

Third Grade: In the Thick of a Thesaurus

The Second in the Reference Tool Series

In keeping with the theme of “tools”,  I reviewed or introduced (depending on the individual student’s experience) a new reference tool, a thesaurus.

First, we reviewed the different functions of real tools (like screwdrivers, hammers, etc.) and discussed what would happen if you used the wrong tool for the job.  Frustration or failure!  We made the connection with reference tools, each having a different function or purpose.  We use the word “function” as this an International Baccalaureate key concept and we are an IB Primary Years Programme.  We reviewed the functions of the dictionary, so that later we could compare it once we determined the functions of a thesaurus.

I found this graphic organizer online and adapted it a bit.  I wanted the students to get some practice in using a thesaurus while looking up some interesting words.

Online Thesaurus

Our students will be getting Dell Venue tablets soon, so I wanted to make the connection between traditional, print thesaurus and its online cousin.  After we used the printed thesaurus the students moved to computers to use Thesaurus.com and looked up a word to find its synonyms.  After this activity we compared the form and function of a paper vs an online thesaurus.  Students noticed a difference of form but not function!

Researching Snowflakes, Paper Flakes & Blogging

It doesn’t snow very often here in south Georgia, but I thought we could still enjoy learning about snowflakes!  I started off reading Snowflake Bentley, by Jacqueline Briggs Martin to all of the 3rd grade classes.  I also wanted the students to review and practice using reference sources.

Reference Practice

I had the students partner up and use either a dictionary, an encyclopedia or an atlas.  They looked up the definition of snow or snowflakes or wrote one fact about snow from the encyclopedia.  The students used the atlas to locate the city of Snowflake and to determine what state it was in.   Reading the Snowflake Bentley book and doing the research used all of our time for the first week.

Sharing our Research and Cutting Paper Snowflakes

The next week we reviewed what they learned about snow and snowflakes.  I summarized the facts on a whiteboard and then we proceeded to the fun part.  The students cut out 6 sided paper snowflakes.

Thinglink and Digital Snowflakes

I sent the link to the teachers and they let the students explore the Thinglink page which also had links to the Bentley museum and the NOAA website containing many of Bentley’s photographs.

Blogging on Edmodo

On the 3rd week I created Edmodo accounts for every student and they had the oppourtunity to blog about all of their “snowflake” experiences from researching to cutting snowflakes (paper and digital).  I had the students write down their thoughts about the whole process, from reading the book, Snowflake Bentley through research and cutting snowflakes.  I asked them to use the International Baccalareate (IB) PYP concept questions, the IB Learner Profiles and Attitudes while reflecting on the experience.  They wrote on index cards so when the time came to blog, they already had their thoughts down on paper.

We also reviewed some internet etiquette.  I think they did a great job for the most part on reflecting on their experience and sharing it with their classmates on Edmodo.  Here are a few samples.

Jalen S: What are the points of view?The neighbor was excited because he knew nobody had ever taken a picture at a snowflakes before. I wondered- How can you cut straight lines?

Kameron: So the snowflakes have 6 sides. I got a dictionary for snowflakes and found out what it has.It snowed on Wednesday and I felt excited. What does it look like in real life?

Abi: Snowflake Bentley is open-minded.He thinks that snowflakes were cool.When I had to create a snowflake it was difficult.

By the way…I think I made it snow in Albany, GA!  We actually saw a dusting of snow on January 29 which was one of the weeks we were doing our snow instruction.
