Kindergarten and Halloween

I have been attempting to give the kindergarten students more opportunity for drawing and writing in the the library.  They are currently exploring holidays in their unit of inquiry.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything

img_7539.jpgAfter we read a book about Halloween, Linda Williams’s book, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything, I asked the students to think of something they were NOT afraid of, that others might be afraid of. I copied a paper headed with “I am not afraid of” and asked them to draw that thing.

Today one of the kindergarten students asked when they came in with their class if they were going to “write” today in the library.  Building up those expectations!

5th Grade Immigration and Padlet

5th grade is starting to study immigration and I wanted to read some picture books that would give an overview or an overarching picture of the topic.  I started with Faith Ringgold’s We Came to America and afterwards we talked about some of the reasons people immigrate to the U.S.A.

Next-Hamid’s Story

The next time we met, I read Andy Glynne’s Hamid’s Story: A Real Life Story of His Journey from Eritrea.

I asked the students to reflect on what they would do if they had a child who had recently immigrated to the U.S. in their classroom; posting our IB Learner Profiles nearby to encourage them to use these as inspiration for their response.

I knew I saved this metal tripod thingies from the trash for a reason!

Padlet

I used Padlet for the students to record their responses.  I like Padlet as it gives the students a variety of ways to record their ideas, through writing, making an audio recording or video taping themselves.  I was surprised that so few from each class chose to video!

Many of the students wrote very heartfelt reflections and this is a lesson I will definitely repeat and Padlet is going to be a the top of my list for recording student voice.

AnswerGarden and Fifth Grade

I have been wanting to try out a digital tool called AnswerGarden and decided to use it with 5th grade today.  They are studying World War I so I showed them a propaganda poster (worked in primary document!) and had them react to it.

Set up for activity

When you set up your “garden” you can choose to have responses limited to 20 or 40 characters.  I chose 20, but this would have been better at 40, but some students figured out to use “texting” abbreviations to work in more words!

I printed out the two websites they needed on slips of paper for each student and had them use two tabs so they could toggle back and forth.  Our students all have Dell tablets, but I also logged into several library computers as back up for dead batteries, etc.

I worried that the case covering the tablets might interfere with typing, but it didn’t!

I alerted the teacher when she came in with the class that I was introducing a new tool and she might find uses for it in the classroom.  Afterwards, I asked her if she saw some possibilities for different types of uses and she said she did.  Hope she uses it.  You can lead a horse to water…and you know the rest!

I am just taking the time to read the responses and I think there is quite a variety.  There is a feature on AnswerGarden that allows you to lock the “garden” so that you can stop students from continuing to add responses.  There are other features so check it out!

World Read Aloud Day 2017

We are participating in World Read Aloud Day again this year and fourth grade classes are my target once again.  We have had a crazy start back after winter break with 2 winter storms.  January 2 brought a severe storm with 90 mph straight-line winds with large sections of the city without power (in many cases for up to a week) and many streets blocked for days by fallen trees.  Nine schools were without power for days.  Sooooo, our students did not go back to school on January 6th as planned, but on January 17th.

Curiosity Week-WRAD

So after readjusting library visits and curriculum, I read Journey by Aaron Becker for Curiosity Week.  They really enthralled by this wordless picture book. I showed the students the trailer after sharing the book and then we used Flipgrid to respond to that book.  They loved all parts of that activity.

And then….our city was hit by a tornado on January 22, with 5 deaths and hundreds of homes blown away or destroyed.  Again, our students were out of school for a week. All that to explain why my schedule for celebrating and leading up to World Read Aloud Day has been a bit loosey-goosey.  These storms were playing havoc on any continuity!

Kindness Week-WRAD

Again, I didn’t follow the recommended weeks due to our extremely interrupted school schedule due to the 2 storms.  Next, I read Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig to the 4th grade students. They really enjoyed this book and I thought that kindness was a timely topic as many of the students were impacted by the storms and had been on the receiving end of kindness.  After reading the story I had them respond using Padlet. Padlet was a new experience for most of them and they especially enjoyed seeing their classmates’ responses.  I try to expose students (and their teachers) to different digital technologies hoping that the teachers will pick up on these various ways to use technology with their classes.

Their responses were not as deep or thoughtful as I would have liked, but as this was the first time they used Padlet, they are usually so enamored with the technology that it overshadows the actual writing.  But, hey, anytime I can get them to practice writing and typing on their tablets I figure I am helping prepare them for their state standardized writing test.  The Georgia Milestones will be administered to all 4th grade students online this year and the more often they use these technologies the more comfortable they will be with them.
