“What I Did On My Summer Vacation”

Chehaw Park Library

Chehaw Park Library-all cleaned up & weeded!

Today was our first day back to work and I thought I would write about the old traditional, cliched topic, “What I did on my summer vacation.”  One of the things I did was weed the library collection at Chehaw Park.

My husband, Doug Porter, is the executive director and asked me to look at the collection, so I put my professional skills to use.  I discussed with Doug what his vision was for the library and then began the process of weeding.  I pared it down considerably as the way the patrons (Chehaw Park staff and volunteers) conduct research.  So much information is now available on the internet and printed scientific data is outdated quickly (lists of endangered species, recommended diet for captive animals, etc.).

I also placed the books on the shelves more like a bookstore or a home library.  I put some books with pretty covers face-out.  I also stacked some books flat on the shelf.  We also interspersed some biofacts (such as antler sheds) and other artifacts to add visual interest.

So, that is one of the things I did on my summer vacation!
